As a former substitute teacher, I have had to teach all types of children. And, this topic does bring back memories of people I have met throughout my life.

Here are some facts directly from

Did you know …

  • Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys
  • Autism prevalence figures are growing
  • Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
  • Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
  • Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
  • Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism
  • There is no medical detection or cure for autism

National Institutes of Health Funds Allocation

  • Total 2012 NIH budget: $30.86 billion

  • Of this, only $169 million goes directly to autism research. This represents 0.55% of total NIH funding.

Now, for those of you who don’t know what autism really means. Here’s a little snippet from the same website:

Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.

So, to share my awareness, I did an ombre using (L-R) Essie Butler Please, Priti NYC Canterbury Bells, and LVX Tribute.

  1. I dig

  2. Only today is Autism Awareness ? I believe EVERYDAY should be Autism Awareness, or instead of just one day, there should be an Autism Awareness Month! I too will be doing a mani in honor of Autism Awareness, I have the perfect polishes for this day. But seeing as BLUE is my favorite color ever, I might just have to make an Autism Awareness MONTH and do nothing but BLUE mani’s all month long. I have enough Blue Polishes to last me a month or more! 😉

  3. Ok I see what it is, April 2nd is the 6th annual WORLD Autism Awareness DAY! And April is Autism Awareness MONTH! Ok got it!! 😀

  4. Thank you! This was great! My son is severely Autistic and each day is different as he is still a child and my reason for everything! xoxo
