Chhole/Chana Masala/Garbanzo Curry


On a cold day, chhole will definitely warm you up with all the spices and flavors. It’s something we would eat on special occasions with bhaturas, which are a little similar to fried naan. Delicious!! They are just as great with brown rice (what we eat it with sometimes) and rotis.

1 tsp of Cumin
1 tsp of Cinnamon
1 tsp of Cardamom
1 tsp of Red Chili Powder
1 tsp of Garam Masala
1 tsp of Coriander
1 tsp of Turmeric

1/2 Red Onion
1 Tomato
1 can of Garbanzo Beans
3 – 4 cups of Water

In a tiny pan, put Cumin, Cinnamon, Cardamom and Red Chili Powder and toast until fragrant. In a coffee/spice grinder, grind toasted spices.

In a food processor, put half a red onion and grind until consistency is like applesauce. In a pan, put the ground onion until browned. In the food processor, blend an entire tomato. After onion has browned, put the tomato and cook until combined and oil begins to separate. Next, add some turmeric and the toasted spices. Add the can of garbanzo beans and cook for about 15 – 20 minutes covered on low to medium. Then, you can add the water and simmer on low. After about 20 minutes, add the coriander and garam masala and salt to taste.
